He's a full co-star — receiving the special "and" credit — in Daddy's Home 2, a family-themed Christmas comedy. It's Gibson's highest-profile role in years, casting him as a frequently absent father to Mark Wahlberg. In the first film, Sara and Brad had to deal with the return of Sara's ex-husband Dusty , the neglectful father of Sara's two kids.
The Paramount movie is Gibson’s first major Hollywood studio film since Signs in 2002, and his first studio comedy since What Women Want in 2000. Brad, Dusty, Don and Kurt go to an improv comedy club, where they have a good time until Kurt picking up a woman at the bar annoys Dusty. Brad enters Don into the improv show, and Dusty chooses the topic of a husband confronting his cheating wife as the subject of the skit.

As it progresses, it is revealed that Don has separated from his wife in real life. Sara comforts Don about his divorce in front of an eggnog bowl, but when Dusty reveals his part in the skit, Don and Brad become furious and Dusty and Brad's relationship becomes strained. When they leave, Megan and Adrianna sneak cups of alcoholic eggnog. Brad, attempting to get back at Dusty, invites Adrianna's father, Roger. Roger intimidates Dusty as he had done to Brad in the first film. The other movie is Lionsgate/Summit’s Dragged Against Concrete, a gritty crime-thriller fromBone Tomahawkfilmmaker S. Craig Zahler that co-stars Vince Vaughn.
After 2010's leaked recordings of phone calls between Gibson and his wife seemed to corroborate allegations of domestic abuse , he laid low for awhile. But he was still given the opportunity to play self-consciously "crazy" bad guys in self-aware pulp like The Expendables 3 and Machete Kills, and by early 2017 he was receiving another Oscar nomination for directing Hacksaw Ridge . Audiences may not be especially interested in looking at Mel Gibson, and plenty of filmmakers may be reluctant to engage with him, but Hollywood has found some workarounds. In April 2016, the sequel was announced, with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg reprising their roles, Sean Anders and John Morris writing the script, and Anders directing. In January 2017, it was reported that Mel Gibson and John Lithgow were being sought to play the main characters' fathers in the film. The two were later confirmed to star, along with Linda Cardellini, John Cena, Owen Vaccaro and Scarlett Estevez, reprising their roles.

Megan, however, wants one instead and is granted permission after Kurt makes a sexist comment. Out hunting the next day, Megan accidentally shoots Kurt in the shoulder, sending him to the hospital. While Kurt is down, she shoots two turkeys, surprising him.

How many years before Harvey Weinstein, thanks in part to Gibson’s powerful Hollywood attorney, gets to go on a late-night show, “joke” about groping actresses and return to business as usual? The first trailer setup the premise of the sequel for both fans of the original film and folks who missed out on it, but it didn't dig much into the antics that the gaggle of dads would get up to. Dusty's tough fighter pilot/Space Shuttle astronaut father Kurt and Brad's overbearing and cheerful father, Don, unexpectedly arrive for Christmas. So no, I’m not amused that Daddy’s Home 2 casts Gibson as a self-assured man’s man and all-around badass. Gibson is literally introduced descending an airport escalator in a beatific orange glow, winking at flight attendants and regaling his grandkids with jokes about dead hookers.

Like Dusty in the first Daddy's Home, Kurt's characterization is supposed to be a familiar type, but it borders on nonsensical. He's supposed to be a celebrated astronaut, but he doesn't seem especially smart, and the movie doesn't find a funny way to reconcile his low-rent womanizing with his pseudo-GQ veneer. Daddy's Home 2 affectionately goofs on Dusty and Brad, but it isn't written to poke much fun at Kurt's smug self-image — a missed opportunity, given Ferrell's skill at spoofing unearned male bravado. Instead, Ferrell's reactions to Gibson — Kurt looks like he was "carved from Gibraltar," Brad enthuses on first sight — are funnier than anything Gibson actually does in the movie. Scenes were filmed in Concord, Massachusetts, Clinton, Massachusetts, Framingham, Massachusetts, Lawrence, Massachusetts and Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
Warner Bros. released the film in North America, but it was a straight distribution deal via the studio’s relationship with GK Films. Box-office analyst Paul Dergarbedian says Gibson’s appearance in the movie didn’t prove a deterrent, and may have even raised its profile. “If Gibson can stay the course, his prospects as an actor seem bright — something unimaginable just a few short years ago,” Degarabedian says. The movie now has six Oscar nominations, including one for Gibson for best director, and has made $163 million worldwide. The team behind Daddy’s Home 2 couldn’t have known that their seemingly innocuous family comedy would come out in the midst of a firestorm about the abhorrent behavior of powerful men in Hollywood.
As Brad's mother arrives, Dusty and Brad discover Brad's new stepfather is Sully Sullenberger, pilot of the 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson" flight. They remember watching the film Sully together recently, and Dusty appears to be happy to see him. Brad seems willing to accept him, but instead runs down the terminal, screaming that Sully will never replace his father and "You only have one good story, my father has a million". After bowling, the family takes the kids to see Santa. There, Kurt tries to convince Dylan to ask Santa for a shotgun, but Don talks him out of it.
